Fiestas in Benitachell to honour Mary Magdalene

July is officially the month of the festivals in Benitachell; the Moors and Christians festival has just finished and now the feast to honour Mary Magdalene, patron saint of the town, start.

This year, the festival start on Tuesday 19th July and end on Saturday 30th. That makes 12 intense days with party and religious activities in Benitachell. This is the schedule of events arranged by the “festeros” in Benitachell to celebrate the feat of Mary Magdalene this year:

Tuesday 19th: First day of the Triduum, with a mass at 09:30 h.

Bous a La Mar Fiesta

As July arrives in Dénia, also do “Bous a la Mar” (Bulls at the Sea), a very traditional festival taking place not only in Dénia, but also in Jávea and Moraira. The ones in Dénia might well be one of the Spanish festivals most covered by the national media. Actually, these were declared a “Festival of National Interest” in Spain back in 1993.

Last 20th June, people started to set up the pseudo bullring at the port of Dénia, to celebrate this deeply rooted fiesta.

In times when the economic and political situation in Spain are not in their best shape, and the world seems more troubled than ever, traditions come to save the day. Valencia’s Fallas Fiesta is a celebration of fire, sound and creation.

The burning down of paper sculptures or ninots symbolizes purification and a new beginning. The creation of the ninots and the whole festival preparation in general for the next year begin the very day after the cremà —burning day of the sculptures. Actually, if you come to think of it, Fallas is present all year round in Valencia.

Saint Anthony, patron saint of animals

Next Sunday 23rd January 2011, Poble Nou de Benitachell celebrates a fiesta to honour San Antonio Abad -Saint Anthony- . The fiesta will start at 09:30 h with a brotherhood lunch in the parking lot of the Mas y Mas supermarket. A mass will follow and at noon, as soon as the mass ends, animals will be blessed at Mercado St.

Saint Anthony, also known in the Region of Valencia as “Sant Antoni del Porquet”, is the patron saint of animals. In every town of the Region of Valencia, priests go out of their churches to bless the animals and pets of the devotees. The tradition says this blessing will protect animals from illnesses. Saint Anthony is also believed to protect against natural disasters, particularly those affecting agricultural fields.

On the weekend of 11th and 12th December, the streets of Moraira are embellished to celebrate the “Mig Any” (Half Year) of the Moros y Cristianos -Moors and Christians Fiestas-. As the tradition advises, the General Committee organizes this fiesta for another year. The event will be celebrated, mostly, in the tent of “Les Sorts” parking area. This is the same spot where the VII Feria de Nuestro Comercio –Local trade fair- took place only a week ago.
